2-Hydroxypropyl-CoM lyase
Definition:
EC Tree > 4 Lyases > 4.4 Carbon-sulfur lyases > 4.4.1 Carbon-sulfur lyases (only sub-subclass identified to date) > 4.4.1.23 2-hydroxypropyl-CoM lyase
2-Hydroxypropyl-CoM lyase requires zinc. It acts on both enantiomers of chiral epoxyalkanes to form the corresponding (R)- and (S)-2-hydroxyalkyl-CoM adducts, and can use other thiols (e.g. 2-mercaptoethanol) as nucleophile; it accepts short-chain epoxyalkanes from C2 (ethylene oxide) to C6 (1,2-epoxyhexane). It is component I of a four-enzyme system (with EC 1.8.1.5, EC 1.1.1.268 and EC 1.1.1.269) for anaerobic epoxyalkane utilization. It converts (R)- and (S)-2-hydroxypropyl-CoM into the corresponding (R)- and (S)-1,2-epoxypropane plus HS-CoM. Structurally it is a zinc-dependent alkyl-CoM lyase.
