4-Hydroxymandelate synthase is an Fe2+-requiring non-heme oxygenase found in bacteria and eukaryotes, involved in biosynthesis of the vancomycin-group glycopeptide antibiotics. It oxidizes 4-hydroxyphenylpyruvate with O2 by oxidative decarboxylation to (S)-4-hydroxymandelate plus CO2.
