5'-Nucleotidase is a broadly specific ectoenzyme that hydrolyses a wide range of 5'-ribonucleotides into the corresponding ribonucleosides and inorganic phosphate. By dephosphorylating extracellular AMP to adenosine, the plasma-membrane GPI-anchored enzyme terminates purinergic signalling, regulates adenosine receptor tone and participates in lymphocyte trafficking and nucleotide salvage. It appears in viruses and cellular organisms and adopts a dimeric HAD-like phosphatase fold.
