5-Phytase

Definition:

EC Tree > 3 Hydrolases > 3.1 Acting on ester bonds > 3.1.3 Phosphoric-monoester hydrolases > 3.1.3.72 5-phytase
5-Phytase is a histidine-acid phosphatase that hydrolyses myo-inositol hexakisphosphate at the 5-position into 1L-myo-inositol 1,2,3,4,6-pentakisphosphate and inorganic phosphate, and then attacks the product more slowly to yield Ins(1,2,3)P3. By liberating phosphate from indigestible phytate in plant feed, the enzyme improves phosphorus bioavailability for monogastric animals and reduces phosphorus pollution of animal waste. It is distributed across Eukaryota and Bacteria and contains the RHGXRXP histidine-acid phosphatase motif.
