6-Phosphofructokinase
Definition:
EC Tree > 2 Transferases > 2.7 Transferring phosphorus-containing groups > 2.7.1 Phosphotransferases with an alcohol group as acceptor > 2.7.1.11 6-phosphofructokinase
6-Phosphofructokinase is the committed glycolytic kinase. It phosphorylates beta-D-fructofuranose 6-phosphate on the 1-hydroxyl, releasing ADP and fructose 1,6-bisphosphate; the rabbit-muscle enzyme is absolutely stereoselective for the beta-anomer. D-tagatose 6-phosphate and sedoheptulose 7-phosphate can act as acceptors, and UTP, CTP and ITP as donors. It is distinct from EC 2.7.1.105. It occurs in viruses and cellular organisms.
