7α-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase catalyzes the oxidation of the 7α-hydroxy group of bile acids and alcohols, both in their free and conjugated forms. Using NAD+, it converts cholate to 3α,12α-dihydroxy-7-oxo-5β-cholan-24-oate, concomitantly reducing NAD+ to NADH and releasing H+; the enzymes from Bacteroides fragilis and Clostridium can also use NADP+. It is found in Eukaryota and Bacteria.
