Acetate kinase

Definition:

EC Tree > 2 Transferases > 2.7 Transferring phosphorus-containing groups > 2.7.2 Phosphotransferases with a carboxy group as acceptor > 2.7.2.1 acetate kinase
Acetate kinase is the Mg2+-requiring short-chain carboxylate kinase. It phosphorylates acetate (and, more slowly, propanoate) using ATP, releasing ADP and acetyl phosphate (or propanoyl phosphate); coupling with EC 2.3.1.8 phosphate acetyltransferase converts acetate to acetyl-CoA. It is central to anaerobic ATP production and, with propionate kinase EC 2.7.2.15, to propanoate formation. Expected in Bacteria, Eukaryota and Archaea.
