Acetone carboxylase

Definition:

EC Tree > 6 Ligases > 6.4 Forming carbon-carbon bonds > 6.4.1 Ligases that form carbon-carbon bonds (only sub-subclass identified to date) > 6.4.1.6 acetone carboxylase
Acetone carboxylase requires Mg2+ and ATP. The reaction proceeds through separate phosphorylation of hydrogencarbonate and acetone, giving carboxyphosphate and phosphoenolacetone, which then combine. The Xanthobacter sp. strain Py2 enzyme also carboxylates butan-2-one to 3-oxopentanoate: acetone plus hydrogencarbonate plus 2 ATP plus 3 water yields acetoacetate plus 2 AMP plus 4 phosphate. Structurally it is a multi-subunit acetone-carboxylase.
