Actinidain is a cysteine endopeptidase from kiwifruit, also known as Chinese gooseberry (Actinidia chinensis), belonging to peptidase family C1 (papain family). Its substrate specificity is similar to that of papain, with broad proteolytic activity on dietary proteins. It is the major allergen and meat-tenderizing enzyme of kiwifruit. In the fruit it contributes to protein reserves mobilization during ripening. It features a papain-like catalytic cysteine-histidine dyad with a distinctive acidic specificity pocket.
