ADP-specific phosphofructokinase is an archaeal glycolytic kinase. It transfers the beta-phosphoryl from ADP onto D-fructose 6-phosphate, releasing AMP and D-fructose 1,6-bisphosphate; GDP, ATP and GTP can substitute to a limited extent. Divalent cations are required, with Mg2+ followed by Co2+ most effective. Expected in Archaea, Eukaryota and Bacteria, it replaces the ATP-dependent PFK-1 of canonical glycolysis.
