Alanine transaminase (ALT/GPT) is a pyridoxal-phosphate enzyme of the Cahill cycle. It reversibly transaminates L-alanine with 2-oxoglutarate, releasing pyruvate and L-glutamate; 2-aminobutanoate can act slowly instead of alanine. It is the standard clinical liver-function enzyme. It occurs in Eukaryota, Bacteria and Archaea.
