Alcohol oxidase is an oxidoreductase acting on primary and unsaturated alcohols. The enzymes from the yeast Candida methanosorbosa and several Basidiomycetes contain FAD, whereas those from the phytopathogens Colletotrichum graminicola and Colletotrichum gloeosporioides use a mononuclear copper-radical mechanism; branched-chain alcohols are poor substrates. It oxidizes a primary alcohol to an aldehyde while reducing O2 to H2O2.
