Aldehyde oxygenase (deformylating) is a diiron-containing enzyme in alkane biosynthesis. The enzyme from the cyanobacterium Nostoc punctiforme PCC 73102 is active in vitro only with ferredoxin, ferredoxin reductase and NADPH, producing mostly C15 and C17 alkanes; the pea (Pisum sativum) enzyme produces C18 to C32 alkanes and is inhibited by metal chelators. It converts a long-chain aldehyde with O2, 2 NADPH and 2 H+ into an alkane, formate, water and 2 NADP+. Structurally it is a diiron aldehyde-deformylating oxygenase.
