All-trans-phytoene synthase

Definition:

EC Tree > 2 Transferases > 2.5 Transferring alkyl or aryl groups, other than methyl groups > 2.5.1 Transferring alkyl or aryl groups, other than methyl groups (only sub-subclass identified to date) > 2.5.1.99 all-trans-phytoene synthase
All-trans-phytoene synthase is a bacterial carotenoid-biosynthesis enzyme requiring Mn2+. The Pantoea agglomerans (Erwinia herbicola) enzyme condenses two molecules of geranylgeranyl diphosphate via prephytoene diphosphate, releasing two diphosphate and producing the all-trans isomer of phytoene, unlike the 15-cis-phytoene synthase EC 2.5.1.32 found in plants and most bacteria.
