Beta-lactamase is a group of amidohydrolases of varying specificity found in viruses and cellular organisms that hydrolyze beta-lactams; some act faster on penicillins, some on cephalosporins (formerly EC 3.5.2.8). It hydrolyzes a beta-lactam into a substituted beta-amino acid. In bacteria it confers antibiotic resistance. It features a serine-beta-lactamase or metallo-beta-lactamase fold.
