Alpha,alpha-trehalase
Definition:
EC Tree > 3 Hydrolases > 3.2 Glycosylases > 3.2.1 Glycosidases, i.e. enzymes that hydrolyse O- and S-glycosyl compounds > 3.2.1.28 alpha,alpha-trehalase
Alpha,alpha-trehalase is an anomer-inverting glucosidase that hydrolyses the alpha-glucosidic O-linkage of alpha,alpha-trehalose, initially releasing equimolar alpha- and beta-D-glucose, widely distributed in microorganisms, plants, invertebrates and vertebrates. By splitting the disaccharide trehalose into two glucose molecules it mobilises the major insect haemolymph sugar and fungal storage carbohydrate. It is distributed across Eukaryota, Bacteria and Archaea.
