Alpha-galactosidase is a galactose-releasing exoglycosidase that hydrolyses terminal non-reducing alpha-D-galactose residues in alpha-D-galactosides, including galacto-oligosaccharides, galactomannans and galactolipids; it also hydrolyses alpha-D-fucosides, as in the representative reaction alpha-D-galactosyl-(1->4)-beta-D-galactosyl-(1->4)-beta-D-glucosyl-(1<1)-ceramide into D-galactose and beta-D-galactosyl-(1->4)-beta-D-glucosyl-(1<1)-ceramide. By removing the terminal alpha-galactose it acts on raffinose, melibiose, globotriaosylceramide (the Fabry-disease substrate) and blood-group B antigen. It is distributed across Eukaryota, Bacteria and Archaea.
