Alpha-glucuronidase
Definition:
EC Tree > 3 Hydrolases > 3.2 Glycosylases > 3.2.1 Glycosidases, i.e. enzymes that hydrolyse O- and S-glycosyl compounds > 3.2.1.139 alpha-glucuronidase
Alpha-glucuronidase is a hemicellulose-degrading exo-glycosidase that hydrolyses an alpha-D-glucuronoside into an alcohol and D-glucuronate; considerable differences in specificity for alpha-D-glucuronides have been reported among enzymes from different fungi, and activity is also found in snails. By removing the 4-O-methylglucuronic acid substituent from xylan side chains it supports microbial and ruminant breakdown of glucuronoxylan. It appears in viruses and cellular organisms.
