Alpha-gurjunene synthase is a sesquiterpene cyclase. Initial cyclization probably gives enzyme-bound bicyclogermacrene which is not released; the Solidago canadensis enzyme also forms a small amount of (+)-gamma-gurjunene. It cyclizes (2E,6E)-farnesyl diphosphate into (-)-alpha-gurjunene and diphosphate. It appears in viruses and cellular organisms. Structurally it is a sesquiterpene cyclase.
