Alpha-mannosidase
Definition:
EC Tree > 3 Hydrolases > 3.2 Glycosylases > 3.2.1 Glycosidases, i.e. enzymes that hydrolyse O- and S-glycosyl compounds > 3.2.1.24 alpha-mannosidase
Alpha-mannosidase is a mannose-releasing exoglycosidase that hydrolyses terminal non-reducing alpha-D-mannose residues in alpha-D-mannosides; it also hydrolyses alpha-D-lyxosides and heptopyranosides with the same C-2, C-3 and C-4 configuration as mannose, and lysosomal alpha-mannosidase trims Man9GlcNAc2-protein with four waters into Man5GlcNAc2-protein and four beta-D-mannopyranose. By degrading high-mannose N-glycans in lysosomes it recycles glycoprotein mannose. It is distributed across Eukaryota, Bacteria and Archaea.
