Alpha-terpinene synthase is a Mg2+-dependent (Mn2+ less effective) monoterpene cyclase characterized from Dysphania ambrosioides (American wormseed). It also uses (3R)-linalyl diphosphate. The reaction involves a 1,2-hydride shift, losing the 1-pro-S hydrogen of geranyl diphosphate. It cyclizes geranyl diphosphate into alpha-terpinene and diphosphate. It appears in viruses and cellular organisms. Structurally it is a monoterpene cyclase.
