AMP phosphorylase is an archaeal purine-nucleotide salvage enzyme involved in AMP metabolism and CO2 fixation through type III RubisCO enzymes. It catalyzes the phosphorolysis of AMP, CMP or UMP, releasing the free nucleobase and alpha-D-ribose 1,5-bisphosphate; activity with CMP and UMP requires activation by cAMP. It occurs in viruses and cellular organisms and links nucleotide breakdown to the ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate regeneration pathway.
