Aristolochene synthase

Aristolochene synthase is a sesquiterpene cyclase. Initial internal cyclization produces monocyclic germacrene A; further cyclization and methyl transfer convert it into aristolochene. In some species germacrene A remains enzyme-bound, but in Penicillium roqueforti it is a minor product (see EC 4.2.3.23). It cyclizes (2E,6E)-farnesyl diphosphate into aristolochene and diphosphate; aristolochene is the precursor of PR-toxin. Structurally it is a sesquiterpene cyclase.
