Arsenite methyltransferase uses S-adenosyl-L-methionine to methylate arsenic triglutathione (or similar arsenic-thiol complexes), successively generating methylarsonite, dimethylarsinous acid and finally trimethylarsane, with thioredoxin as reductant; in microbes it makes trivalent methylarsenical antibiotics, whereas in animals it detoxifies inorganic arsenite.
