Arylsulfatase (type I) is a type I sulfatase that hydrolyses an aryl sulfate into a phenol and sulfate; type I sulfatases use the catalytic residue 3-oxo-L-alanine (formylglycine), generated by post-translational oxidation of a conserved cysteine or serine by formylglycine-generating enzyme (EC 1.8.3.7), the serine-type anaerobic sulfatase-maturating enzyme (EC 1.1.98.7) or the cysteine-type anaerobic sulfatase-maturating enzyme (EC 1.8.98.7), which attacks the sulfur nucleophilically. Distinct from non-heme-iron type II dioxygenases and metallo-beta-lactamase-fold type III sulfatases, the arylsulfatases are found in both prokaryotes and eukaryotes with rather similar specificities. By desulfating phenolic sulfates they support steroid, neurotransmitter and glycosaminoglycan turnover. They are distributed across Eukaryota, Bacteria and Archaea.
