Autoinducer-2 kinase is the bacterial quorum-sensing AI-2 degradation kinase. It phosphorylates (S)-4,5-dihydroxypentane-2,3-dione on the 5-hydroxyl, releasing ADP and (S)-4-hydroxypentane-2,3-dione 5-phosphate, internalizing and inactivating the universal AI-2 signal. It occurs in viruses and cellular organisms.
