Aureolysin is a zinc metalloenzyme from Staphylococcus aureus, earlier confused with staphylokinase (a non-enzymatic plasminogen activator). It cleaves the insulin B chain with specificity similar to thermolysin, preferring a hydrophobic P1' residue, and activates the glutamyl endopeptidase (EC 3.4.21.19) of S. aureus. In the pathogen it contributes to virulence and protease cascades. It features a thermolysin-like zinc catalytic fold.
