Bacteriochlorophyll a synthase is a prenyltransferase that catalyzes the addition of a geranylgeranyl hydrophobic chain to bacteriochlorophyllide a via an ester bond with the 17-propionate residue, releasing geranyl geranyl diphosphate and producing geranylgeranyl-bacteriochlorophyllide a. The side chain is later modified to a phytyl chain, yielding mature bacteriochlorophyll a. The enzyme occurs in photosynthetic bacteria and other cellular organisms.
