Barrierpepsin is a secreted aspartic endopeptidase of baker's yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae, belonging to peptidase family A1. It selectively cleaves the -Leu6-/-Lys- bond in the alpha-mating-factor pheromone. In yeast it down-regulates mating-factor signaling and shapes the mating barrier between strains. It features a pepsin-like aspartic-protease fold secreted into the cell wall.
