Beta-amyrin synthase cyclizes (3S)-2,3-epoxy-2,3-dihydrosqualene into β-amyrin. Some organisms have a monofunctional β-amyrin synthase, others a multifunctional enzyme that also synthesizes α-amyrin (EC 5.4.99.40) or lupeol (EC 5.4.99.41). It appears in viruses and cellular organisms. Structurally it is an OSC.
