Beta-glucosidase is a broad-specificity beta-D-glucoside exoglycosidase that hydrolyses terminal non-reducing beta-D-glucosyl residues, releasing beta-D-glucose; some examples also hydrolyse one or more of beta-D-galactosides, alpha-L-arabinosides, beta-D-xylosides and beta-D-fucosides. By cleaving cello-oligosaccharides, cyanogenic glucosides and dietary beta-glucosides it acts in microbial cellulose utilisation, plant defence and small-intestinal sugar digestion. It appears in viruses and cellular organisms.
