Beta-santalene synthase is a sesquiterpene cyclase that synthesizes a mixture from (2E,6E)-farnesyl diphosphate: (-)-beta-santalene, (+)-alpha-santalene, (-)-exo-alpha-bergamotene and traces of (+)-epi-beta-santalene (see EC 4.2.3.82 and EC 4.2.3.81). It cyclizes (2E,6E)-farnesyl diphosphate into (-)-beta-santalene and diphosphate. It appears in viruses and cellular organisms. Structurally it is a sandalwood sesquiterpene cyclase.
