Bisphosphoglycerate mutase

Definition:

EC Tree > 5 Isomerases > 5.4 Intramolecular transferases > 5.4.2 Phosphotransferases (phosphomutases) > 5.4.2.4 Bisphosphoglycerate mutase
Bisphosphoglycerate mutase phosphorylates itself by 3-phosphoglyceroyl phosphate, yielding phosphoenzyme and 3-phosphoglycerate; the latter is rephosphorylated to 2,3-bisphosphoglycerate, but the reaction is slowed by dissociation of 3-phosphoglycerate, so added 3-phosphoglycerate stimulates activity. The enzyme also catalyses the reactions of EC 5.4.2.1 slowly. It converts 3-phospho-D-glyceroyl phosphate into 2,3-bisphospho-D-glycerate. Structurally it is a BPGM phosphohistidine enzyme.
