Caldopentamine synthase
Definition:
EC Tree > 2 Transferases > 2.5 Transferring alkyl or aryl groups, other than methyl groups > 2.5.1 Transferring alkyl or aryl groups, other than methyl groups (only sub-subclass identified to date) > 2.5.1.127 caldopentamine synthase
Caldopentamine synthase is an aminopropyltransferase characterized from the thermophilic archaeon Hyperthermus butylicus. It transfers an aminopropyl group from S-adenosyl 3-(methylsulfanyl)propylamine onto norspermine, releasing S-methyl-5'-thioadenosine and producing caldopentamine. It can also synthesize norspermine from norspermidine and thermospermine from spermidine, both with lower activity. The long-chain polyamines stabilize double-stranded DNA at high temperatures. Unlike EC 2.5.1.23 and EC 2.5.1.126, this enzyme shows no activity with propylamine.
