Calpain 6 is an atypical calpain-family protein found in viruses and cellular organisms that acts as a microtubule-stabilizing protein. It lacks the active-site catalytic cysteine residue and no proteolytic activity has been detected. In development it regulates cytoskeletal dynamics and placental and neuronal morphogenesis. It features a calpain-like fold in which the catalytic cysteine has been lost during evolution.
