Cytidine deaminase is a zinc-containing deaminase found in viruses and cellular organisms, widely distributed. It deaminates cytidine and 2'-deoxycytidine at similar efficiencies, salvaging both exogenous and endogenous cytidine for UMP synthesis. It hydrolyzes cytidine into uridine and ammonia, and 2'-deoxycytidine into 2'-deoxyuridine and ammonia. In cells it converts cytidine to uridine. It contains zinc.
