Carboxylesterase is the broad intracellular serine hydrolase. It hydrolyzes a carboxylic ester with water to an alcohol and carboxylate; microsomal forms also carry arylesterase, lysophospholipase, acetylesterase, acylglycerol lipase, acylcarnitine hydrolase, palmitoyl-CoA hydrolase, amidase and aryl-acylamidase activities, and hydrolyze vitamin A esters. It occurs in viruses and cellular organisms.
