Carboxymethylcellulase
Definition:
EC Tree > 3 Hydrolases > 3.2 Glycosylases > 3.2.1 Glycosidases, i.e. enzymes that hydrolyse O- and S-glycosyl compounds > 3.2.1.203 carboxymethylcellulase
Carboxymethylcellulase is an endo-cleaving glycosidase from the acidophilic bacterium Alicyclobacillus acidocaldarius, which cleaves beta-(1->4)-linked residues and endohydrolyses (1->4)-beta-D-glucosidic linkages in carboxymethylcellulose; it is specific for carboxymethylcellulose and does not act on crystalline cellulosic substrates such as Avicel. By solubilising soluble cellulose derivatives it serves as a model endoglucanase and in textile and paper bioprocessing. It is distributed across Bacteria and Eukaryota.
