Carboxypeptidase A
Definition:
EC Tree > 3 Hydrolases > 3.4 Acting on peptide bonds (peptidases) > 3.4.17 Metallocarboxypeptidases > 3.4.17.1 carboxypeptidase A
Carboxypeptidase A is a zinc enzyme formed from procarboxypeptidase A, isolated from cattle, pig and dogfish pancreas and other sources including mast cells and skeletal muscle, and the type example of peptidase family M14; it releases a C-terminal amino acid but has little or no action on -Asp, -Glu, -Arg, -Lys or -Pro. By digesting dietary and tissue peptides at the C-terminus it participates in protein digestion and peptide turnover. It appears in viruses and cellular organisms.
