Carnosine synthase (CARNS1) forms ADP rather than AMP: ATP plus L-histidine plus β-alanine yields ADP plus phosphate plus carnosine. Carnosine is a dipeptide present at high concentration in skeletal muscle and olfactory bulb of vertebrates (and in some invertebrate skeletal muscle); the enzyme can also form homocarnosine from 4-aminobutanoate plus L-histidine. Structurally it is a member of the ATP-grasp fold.
