Catalase
Definition:
EC Tree > 1 Oxidoreductases > 1.11 Acting on a peroxide as acceptor > 1.11.1 Peroxidases > 1.11.1.6 catalase
Catalase is a heme protein (or, in some organisms, a manganese protein containing Mn(III) in the resting state, often called pseudocatalase) found in viruses and cellular organisms. It disproportionates 2 H2O2 into O2 and 2 H2O, protecting cells from oxidative stress; enzymes from organisms such as Penicillium simplicissimum can also act as peroxidases (EC 1.11.1.7), using ethanol and other organic compounds as hydrogen donors.
