Cathepsin L1

Definition:

EC Tree > 3 Hydrolases > 3.4 Acting on peptide bonds (peptidases) > 3.4.22 Cysteine endopeptidases > 3.4.22.B49 cathepsin L1
Cathepsin L1 is a cathepsin-L-family cysteine endopeptidase found in viruses and cellular organisms. It shows a clear preference for Arg at P1 (Lys, Glu, Thr and Met are less efficient), a strong preference for hydrophobic residues at P2 with Leu favored, and can accommodate Pro at P2 though less efficiently than cathepsin L2. Fasciola hepatica cathepsin L1 produces clear degradation fragments from collagen. In parasites it digests host proteins; in mammalian lysosomes it turns over cargo. It features a papain-like catalytic fold.
