Cellobionic acid phosphorylase is a glycoside phosphorylase found in cellulolytic bacteria and fungi. It catalyzes the reversible phosphorolysis of cellobionic acid, releasing alpha-D-glucose 1-phosphate and D-gluconate; in the synthetic direction it produces 4-O-beta-D-glucopyranosyl-D-glucuronate from alpha-D-glucose 1-phosphate and D-glucuronate with low activity. It occurs in viruses and cellular organisms and participates in the microbial utilization of oxidized cellulose oligomers.
