Cellulase
Definition:
EC Tree > 3 Hydrolases > 3.2 Glycosylases > 3.2.1 Glycosidases, i.e. enzymes that hydrolyse O- and S-glycosyl compounds > 3.2.1.4 cellulase
Cellulase is a cellulose-degrading endo-glycoside hydrolase that endohydrolyses (1->4)-beta-D-glucosidic linkages in cellulose, lichenin and cereal beta-D-glucans, and will also hydrolyse 1,4-linkages in beta-D-glucans that also contain 1,3-linkages. By internally cutting the cellulose polymer it generates ends on which cellobiohydrolases act, enabling microbial degradation of plant biomass. It is distributed across Eukaryota, Bacteria and Archaea.
