Ceramide kinase is a sphingolipid-signaling kinase. It phosphorylates ceramide on the 1-hydroxyl, releasing ADP and ceramide 1-phosphate, a bioactive sphingolipid that promotes cell survival, proliferation and inflammation. It is enriched in the plasma membrane and Golgi, and is distinct from the ceramide-sphingomyelin cycle. It occurs in viruses and cellular organisms.
