Chlorophyll synthase

Definition:

EC Tree > 2 Transferases > 2.5 Transferring alkyl or aryl groups, other than methyl groups > 2.5.1 Transferring alkyl or aryl groups, other than methyl groups (only sub-subclass identified to date) > 2.5.1.62 chlorophyll synthase
Chlorophyll synthase is the final esterification enzyme of chlorophyll biosynthesis, requiring Mg2+. It first binds phytyl diphosphate, then transfers the phytyl (or geranylgeranyl) group onto the propionate side chain of chlorophyllide a, releasing diphosphate and forming chlorophyll a. The reaction also occurs with geranylgeranyl diphosphate in place of phytyl diphosphate. It occurs in Eukaryota and Bacteria.
