Cholesterol oxidase is a secreted FAD-containing bacterial bifunctional enzyme catalyzing the first two steps of cholesterol degradation. It oxidizes the 3β-hydroxyl of cholesterol to a keto group, giving cholest-5-en-3-one while reducing O2 to H2O2, and also isomerizes the double bond from the Δ5 to the Δ6 position (cf. isomerase EC 5.3.3.1).
