Choline dehydrogenase is a PQQ-containing quinoprotein. In many bacteria, plants and animals, the osmoprotectant betaine is made in two steps—choline to betaine aldehyde, then betaine aldehyde to betaine. In plants the first step is catalyzed by choline monooxygenase (EC 1.14.15.7), whereas in animals and many bacteria it is carried out by this membrane-associated enzyme, which oxidizes choline to betaine aldehyde and reduces an acceptor.
