Choline oxidase
Definition:
EC Tree > 1 Oxidoreductases > 1.1 Acting on the CH-OH group of donors > 1.1.3 With oxygen as acceptor > 1.1.3.17 choline oxidase
Choline oxidase is an FAD-containing flavoprotein that catalyzes the stepwise oxidation of choline: first to betaine aldehyde, then to the osmoprotectant betaine, reducing O2 to H2O2; overall choline plus 2 O2 and H2O yields betaine and 2 H2O2. In plants the first step is usually catalyzed by choline monooxygenase (EC 1.14.15.7), whereas in many bacteria and animals this single enzyme carries out both steps.
