Choline-sulfatase is an osmo-regulatory sulfatase that hydrolyses choline sulfate into choline and sulfate. By releasing choline from the storage ester choline-O-sulfate it supplies the compatible solute choline and the osmoprotectant glycine betaine pathway in bacteria and plants. It is distributed across Eukaryota and Bacteria and adopts a type-I sulfatase fold.
